In preparation for 21st century demands for those working across sectors (including government, industry and nonprofit), the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion certificate is ideally positioned to prepare you as a thought leader and sharpen your skills to address emergent issues related to our increasing diversity.

Through world-class faculty and instruction in the College of Arts and Sciences, the curriculum will expose you to cutting-edge social research on diversity and equip you with the analytic tools necessary to work toward maximizing societal equity.

Upon successful completion of the program, you’ll possess an in-depth understanding of contemporary social diversity, particularly with respect to the three dimensions that are the root of major societal cleavages: social class, race/ethnicity and gender/sexuality.


This is a 12-credit hour certificate that is highly customizable to your interests, with dozens of courses available across departments that meet the program requirements. Several courses are offered online (marked with an asterisk on the curriculum sheet), adding flexibility to the program. 

  • All courses must be taken at Ohio State
  • A maximum of 50% overlap with major/minor programs is permitted
  • A minimum GPA of 2.0 is required to complete a certificate program
  • Only course grades of A through C- are permitted to count toward a certificate program

How to apply

The Diversity, Equity and Inclusion certificate is administered through the Department of SociologyPlease contact their advising office to declare for the program and schedule courses.​

The Diversity, Equity and Inclusion certificate is also available as a stand-alone, post-baccalaureate program for anyone with a bachelor's degree. Prospective post-bachelor's degree students must complete the Undergraduate Certificate Application. Applicants must request that all colleges or universities attended send official transcripts to Ohio State for review.

Students previously enrolled in an undergraduate degree program at Ohio State should contact the Department of Sociology's undergraduate advising office to determine eligibility to re-enroll at Ohio State and have your student record updated. Students previously enrolled in a graduate or non-degree program at Ohio State must complete the Undergraduate Certificate Application.
