IPR awarded $2.7 million NIH grant renewal
The Institute for Population Research (IPR), an interdisciplinary center focusing on population and health research, recently renewed its five-year infrastructure grant from the National Institute of Health’s (NIH) Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development. The $2.7 million grant funds IPR through 2024 and is the program’s fourth consecutive five-year core-support grant from NIH.
“This successful renewal confirms IPR’s status as a premier population research center,” said John Casterline, director of IPR and professor in the Department of Sociology. “Renewal of these grants is intensely competitive because they signify high standing as a home base for top-notch population science research.”
The grant will support research in population science. The articulated themes of IPR’s grant are:
- Sexual and reproductive health
- Family demography
- Mortality and health over the life course
- Migration
The funds will also support a variety of activities and services, including seed grants, didactic workshops and assistance in developing and submitting competitive applications for external awards.
“Our success once again is due to the outstanding research of IPR’s affiliates dispersed through the university,” Casterline said. “Strong institutional commitment to IPR — from the Colleges of Arts and Sciences, Education and Human Ecology, and Public Health — is also crucial and no doubt factors into reviewers’ evaluations. This grant is a collective achievement.”
