On July 15, 2021, Interim Executive Dean-designate David Horn sent the following message to Arts and Sciences faculty and staff.

Dear Colleagues,

I am pleased to share that Andrew Martin, associate vice provost and professor of sociology, has agreed to serve as the college’s interim associate executive dean for undergraduate education, effective August 1.

Andrew is a talented and dedicated academic leader with a wealth of Ohio State experience at the college and university level. A member of our sociology faculty since 2004, Andrew studies social movements, contentious market politics, and organizational theory. Among his many accomplishments, he is a recipient of the department’s Most Outstanding Faculty Award as well as the Arts and Sciences Honors Faculty Service Award. From 2016 to 2019, he served as the department’s director of undergraduate studies, during which time he oversaw the creation of two new academic programs — the BS major in sociology and the certificate program in diversity, equity, and inclusion — and served on the university’s General Education Review Committee.

In 2019, Andrew was appointed associate vice provost in the Office of Academic Affairs, where he supports workforce development and other curricular initiatives, works with the Ohio Department of Higher Education on issues related to student transfer at the state level, and oversees university-wide curricular assessment. He will continue to serve in his associate vice provost role.

As interim associate executive dean, Andrew will lead our committed and compassionate colleagues who work every day to enhance the student experience within and beyond our learning environments. (I can say this with firsthand experience.) The work of these teams — academic enrichment, advising and academic services, career success, curriculum and assessment, distance education, student programs, and undergraduate recruitment — is particularly critical as we prepare to reinvigorate campus life this fall.

Among his responsibilities, Andrew will lead the college’s work in General Education implementation, continuing our forward momentum and ensuring that all Arts and Sciences units see themselves in the GE and have the support they need. He will also work to advance our newer initiatives, including in workforce development and distance education, and engage with departments as we identify areas of opportunity.

I know you will join me in welcoming Andrew to his new leadership position in the college. I’ll be in touch with you again soon as the start of the new academic year draws closer — but in the meantime, I hope you are enjoying your summer and finding the time to relax and recharge.
